The Cancer Control Program conducts research that helps reduce the incidence, mortality and morbidity of cancer. The primary goals are to: 1) design and implement etiologic studies and behavioral intervention programs geared toward cancer prevention and risk reduction; 2) improve the use of validated early-detection tests; and 3) conduct survivorship and health services research, including lifestyle interventions, quality-of-life assessment, health outcomes and behavioral intervention. Within these areas, research concentrates on underserved/minority populations, communication studies and behavior strategies, capitalizing on program members' strengths, such as epidemiology and biology, to meet the needs of patient populations.
A major initiative in the Cancer Control Program is the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities grant which focuses on the goal of understanding why high rates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality are observed in Appalachia Ohio.
The Appalachian Community Cancer Network (ACCN) is a National Cancer Institute-funded research initiative to reduce cancer health disparities in the Appalachian region through community participation in education, research and training.
