Researchers in this program strive to better understand the association between genes and cancer and to exploit this association to reduce the incidence of cancer death. Specific aims are to: 1) identify human genes that, either through direct mutations or epigenetic mechanisms, predispose individuals to cancer; 2) determine molecular mechanisms underlying the expression and function of genes contributing to normal development and multi-stage cancer progression (studies in model organisms are critical to this aim); and 3) promote clinical applications of gene identification and an understanding of their functions for better diagnosis, prognosis, surveillance, prevention and treatment of cancer. Studies use common analytical tools in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, recombinant DNA technology and transgenic organisms. The clinical component of this program is integrated with the basic molecular and translational studies, moving research from lab bench to bedside and back to bench.
A major initiative in the MBCG Program is the Program Project Grant (PPG), a $8.7 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to investigate Genetic Analysis of the Tumor Microenvironment. Read more about the Program Project Grant.
