The Viral Oncology Program promotes collaborative research to discover mechanisms of virus-related neoplastic disease, identify potential therapeutic agents and develop novel therapies. Focus areas are: 1) discerning molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease associated with human lymphotropic virus type I (HLTV-1); 2) development of therapeutic virus vectors (transporters); and 3) lymphoma associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Newer members of this program have broadened its research scope to include additional families of oncogenic viruses and a clinical component with a proven record of translating basic research to the bedside. Strong research areas include the use of retroviruses as tools to understand lymphocytic transformation, and the development of viral vectors for gene-delivery systems.
